Abstract
- The introduction of altruism and philanthropy into contemporary economics began with Gary Backer's 1961 paper 'Notes on an Economic Analysis of Philanthropy', through the reconsideration of the utility function and topics at the intersection of economics and other social sciences. Several works on economics through the 1960s that incorporated the views of unselfish behavior are discussed.
