Abstract
- Experimental analysis of the suppression of leucine-induced insulin release and cellular disorganization during chronic renal failure (CRF) shows that islets from CRF animals exhibit decreased leucine-induced insulin release and that secondary CRF hyperparathyroidism mediates the decreases. Parathyroidectomy of the animals with CRF or treatment with parathyroid hormone inhibitor results in the correction of cellular disorganization and decrease of insulin release. Defects in leucine metabolism and disruption of leucine-GLDH-alpha-ketoglutarate-glutaminase pathways also accompany cellular disorganization during CRF.
