Abstract
- Abnormal production of collagenase, an enzyme that breaks down connective tissue, may be responsible for the deterioration of salivary glands seen in Sjogren's syndrome (SS). SS is an autoimmune disease involving destruction of salivary and tear-producing glands. Degradation of collagen would destroy the support structure of the gland and disrupt functioning. Eight patients with SS and six healthy volunteers had biopsies taken from salivary glands. Saliva samples were also taken. Analysis of stained microscope slides showed abnormal amounts of the type of collagenase produced by connective tissue cells. Analysis of saliva showed that only SS patients had this collagenase in their saliva and that it was fully functional.
