The development of building design codes using allowable stress method (ASM) and limit states method (LSM) standards must feature safety considerations for the load and resistance factors. The American Institute of Steel Construction's load factor design standards have been criticized for failing to consider such safety precautions. Extensive engineering research and experience as established as vital factors in developing such standards.
