Abstract

Cloning and sequencing of the gene associated with the uptake of 4-hydroxybenzoate in Rhizobium leguminosarum reveals that 4-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylase (PobA) is essential for the uptake of 4-hydroxybenzoate. Mutants of R. leguminosarum lacking PobA fail to accumulate 4-hydroxybenzoate, and addition of a 2.0kb EcoRI-PstI DNA fragment, having DNA sequence similarity with the structural gene for PobA, restores the uptake of 4-hydroxybenzoate.
