Abstract: A genome-wide linkage study of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) using microsatellite markers, obtained from genothon maps and other informative markers derived using polymerase chain reaction analysis, localizes an unidentified susceptibility locus for IDDM. The locus is present in the FGF3 gene area on the chromosome 11Q. Genetic linkage studies also facilitate the identification of susceptibility loci in other multifactorial disorders.
