Abstract

The economic role of Berlin suffered after the city was divided, and the western part received subsidies from West Germany. Commercial operations, the fashion industry, newspaper publishing and other activities were hit by the division. Berlin may amalgamate with Brandenburg which has tourist potential due to its palaces and landscape. Problems include a housing shortage, the phasing out of the Berlin subsidy, and differences between west Berliners and east Berlin and Brandenburg.
