Abstract

Immunocytochemistry proves the expression of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor subtype 3 (IP3R-3) in pancreatic islets. Immunogold electron microscopy helps localize these cells to the secretory granules of insulin-secreting beta cells and somatostatin secretory granules. Localization studies reveal the involvement of granule Ca(2+) stores in the secretory process, which is regulated by IP3R-3. Diabetes and fasting or refeeding increases IP3R-3 levels in islets and glucose increases IP3R-3 levels in insulinoma cells.
