Abstract

Examination of cognitive theories of depression shows that only a subset of depressed inpatients exhibit distinct negative cognitive styles. Cognitive styles are determined by personality disorder, negative family dynamics during childhood, history of sexual abuse and depressive symptomology. These observations suggest the importance of combining the trauma concept with the hopelessness theory.
