Fluoride ion capture from water with a cationic borane

The synthesis of a cationic Lewis acidic borane that forms a highly stable zwitterionic ammonium/fluoroborate complex possessing a C-H...F-B hydrogen bond, is described. The results have indicated that cationic boranes might be well suited as molecular recognition units for fluoride in water under biphasic conditions.
