Anticonvulsant is found effective in bipolar cases

Abstract

A study conducted by Charles Bowden of the University of Texas Health Center indicated that divalproex sodium is just as effective as lithium in the treatment of acute mania in manic depressive patients. The anticonvulsant drug divalproex is also effective in the treatment of subtypes of manic depression, such as mania caused by traumatic injury, which normally do not respond to lithium treatment. Bowden says that the study will continue to try to determine which types of patients do better on lithium, and which do better on divalproex sodium.<br />Divalproex sodium is as effective as lithium in the treatment of acute mania, according to a new study.
