Abstract

The increase in intermodal cargoes has sown bewilderment among carriers, shippers and other industry players on how much more growth to expect. According to a study of the intermodal industry's potential, the current 7% annual growth may push the volume of intermodal shipments beyond the 11.5 million mark by the year 2000. However, capacity constraints and other problems are seen to restrain future growth rates, pegging these at 4% to 6%.
