Abstract

Reconstruction of American universities in cities, which are plagued by a confused and disoriented university system, such as Buffalo requires a visionary leadership, a recognition of theory and practice as complementary activities and an acknowledgement of the social function of education. Research-intensive universities should replace research universities so that research is conducted against a background of teaching. Service-universities should cater to the needs of the citizens of the nation.
