Abstract

The Mexican government began conducting a comprehensive modernization and publlic sector reorganization program in 1993 to finance the operation of over 1,100 state-owned entities. This initiative included a privatization program which has led to the sale of more than 900 enterprises, 400 of which were privatized during the term of Pres. Carlos Salinas de Gortari. Mexico's privatization efforts, as of 1994, are geared toward infrastructure services such as roads, ports, water treatment, electric power and telecommunications.<br />HISTORY Mexico has long been at the forefront of privatization in Latin America.
