Abstract: Picosecond and nanosecond spectroscopic studies facilitate the analysis of the photochemistry of naphthacenequinones. Kinetic studies of the reaction mechanism for irreversible decomposition of the complexes enable the assignment of reaction intermediates to the specific transient species. The data reveals that triplet states catalyze the adiabatic reaction, and excited triplet hydrogen abstraction is the pathway for decomposition.
