Somatoform disorders: personality and the social matrix of somatic distress

Personality traits such as neuroticism, repressive styles and alexithymia contribute to the incidence of somatoform disorders among individuals. Absorption of the symptoms of somatoform disorders make the patients prone to illness anxiety which harm their mental and physical health. Future studies should encompass longitudinal community studies to analyze personality interactions with illness experience and reduce illness anxiety among patients.
