The dynamics of proton transfer at the C side of the mitochondrial membrane: picosecond and microsecond measurements

The injection of pyranine(8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate), an excited-state proton emitter, into the aqueous space of submitochondrial particles produces dye which recorded acidification in the space. The respiratory processes and the reverse electron transfer of the vesicles are not influenced by the dye concentration. The protons are photodissociated from the 8-hydroxy position by the dye by pulse irradiation.
