Coup ousting Thailand's Premier tests democracy in key U.S. ally

A bloodless coup d'etat has occured in Thailand while Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was on a diplomatic mission at the United Nations in New York. The Asian country has struggled into democracy and has been supported by the United States. Thailand has an influential monarchy although it is unclear if they had a role in the insurgency.
