Human herpesvirus 8 oral shedding in HIV-infected men with and without Kaposi Sarcoma

Abstract: The issues about the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) shedding in oral epithelial mucosal cells in a cohort of HIV-infected men in relation to sexual preference, immunocompetence, Kaposi Sarcoma lesions, and survival is addressed. Human herpesvirus 8 could be present in oral epithelial cells and in shed independent of the patient's immune status, showing that oral HHV-8 shedding might occur at any time in HHV-8-seropositive individuals.
