Abstract

The tethered walking robot Dante, capable of climbing steep slopes, was developed at Carnegie Mellon University in 1992. This robot is used in Antarctica to explore Mount Erebus, an active volcano. Its operation will reveal its abilities in real exploration missions, rough terrain locomotion, environmental survival and self-sustained operation in Antarctica's severe cold. The exploration of the volcano was aimed at studying the unique convecting magma lake in the inner crater and to validate the advancing mobile robotics technology.
