Abstract

The study demonstrated Bifidobacterium infantis to ferment purified human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) as a sole carbon source, while another gut commensal, Lactobacillus gasseri, did not ferment HMO. The results support the hypothesis that HMO selectively amplify bacterial populations in the infant intestine.
