Abstract

Revolutionary change, whether fast and violent or slow and peaceful, is strongly affected by interstate politics. Interstate conflict may enhance individual freedom and well-being, or it may severely damage freedom and wellbeing. The effect on freedom appears to depend on the degree of foreign pressure, the collapse of internal government and the role of intellectuals.
