Abstract

The art of growing giant vegetables is a new hobby in the United Kingdom, which uses the latest developments in plant technology, including home-grown tricks, and which is less competitive than might be thought. Growers are keener to expand the boundaries of nature than compete among themselves, and tricks used include feeding plants with pulverised contraceptive tablets, which increase the water take up level of plants. Size and weight take precedence over flavor, and growers aim at world records. Growers exchange seeds and advice, and travel throughout England visiting each others gardens.
