Abstract

The field of records management has a lack of professional literature containing field-related knowledge which is maintained by a disciplinary body, hampering record management's claim to professional status. A discipline is the field's intellectual body, with a profession usually an occupation that is historically accepted as being professional. The discipline should set out to develop the literature required to support the whole field's research, development and knowledge. Records management is only just starting to develop professional characteristics.
