Abstract
- Data from eight US firms producing assembled products were reviewed and the relationships between product innovation, competition. Their effects on industry structure were also studied using these data as bases. Analysis of the data revealed that the emergence of a dominant product design shifts focus from innovation towards product development, scale production, management techniques and standardization in favor of larger firms. Inability to adapt an organization to this pattern of technological evolution caused eventual failure of the weaker firms.
