Abstract

An in vitro system capable of inducing oligodendrocytes to express class II major histocompatibility (MHC) mRNA and surface antigens was developed. MHC expression was achieved by treating the oligodendrocytes with interferon-gamma in a medium containing the synthetic glucocorticoid, dexamethasone. This class II MHC expression in oligodendrocytes may provide a mechanism of cell-type-specific killing by class II-restricted T cells in human demyelinating diseases.
