Abstract

An approach for the estimation of homolytic bond dissociation energies of the benzylic C-H bonds in radical anions and radical cations is developed. The method is employed for radical anions derived from 19 fluorines, 15 triphenylmethanes, p-nitrotoluene, diphenylmethane, bis(4-nitrophenyl)methane and three xanthenes. The bond dissociation energy values for the C-H bonds in the various radical anion and cation derivatives are provided.
