Abstract

A study was done on the effect of dietary-linolenic acid on mouse peritoneal prostaglandin E1. It was shown that mouse peritoneal macrophages elongate dietary gamma-linolenic acid to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid and converts it to prostaglandin E1 which is an anti-aggregatory, anti-inflammatory eicosanoid. Prostaglandin E1 inhibits platelet aggregation, superoxide anion generation, vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and activation of the fibrinolytic system.
