Abstract

The effect of age on the absorption of monosaccharides, amino acids and vitamins was investigated using jejunal segments from young and aged mice. Although amino acid and vitamin absorption is higher among young mice, the difference in the absorption rates between young and aged individuals was not significant. Monosaccharide, specifically glucose, absorption was much higher among young individuals. Examination of the amount of sodium-glucose cotransporters in the jejunal segments studied reveal that transporter density decrease with age resulting in lower glucose absorption rates.
