Abstract

A study was conducted on the signal transduction process by which K-Cl transporter activity is modulated by cell volume changes using measurements of the time course of K-Cl cotransport activation in red cells. A 10-minute delay was observed in swollen cells with normal volume and Mg prior to the achievement of a final steady-state flux. A delay was also observed following cotransport shrinkage inactivation. In low-Mg cells, a delay in cotransport shrinkage inactivation was also detected. These results are discussed in terms of a three-state model.
