Abstract

After announcing its nuclear capabilities, North Korea stopped participating in the six-party talks that aim at non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. China was instrumental in bringing North Korea back to the negotiation table. However, it is in China's interests to prolong and evade a resolution on the subject. Consequently, there was little progress at the Beijing talks on September 19, 2005, despite the presence of North Korea at the table, which was hailed as a breakthrough.
