Abstract

The American Indians have clearly left a legacy of freedom and liberty to American and foreign governments. Early records by colonists depicting Indian savagery were merely attempts to downgrade Indian culture. In fact, the Indians were efficiently managing democratic institutions when the colonists came. Indian spokesmen were even responsible for the balance of powerbetween the French and the English in the 16th Century. Research reveals that Indians actually had a major influence on early constitutional founders and in fact exposed the colonists to Indian ideals of freedom and democracy.
