Up-regulation of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 transcription by hepatitis B virus X protein

Abstract: A study was done to determine the mechanism of induction of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) duringinflammation and necrosis from chronic hepatitis B. The specific aim was to find out whether ICAM-1 induction is due to inflammatory cytokines or to directeffects of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The results showed that the X protein (pX) of HBV induces ICAM-1 expression by increasing its rate of trnascription. This direct regulatory effect indicates a role for pX in HBV infection immunopathogenesis.
