Abstract: Recent international trends and the rise of the information industry has spurred the need for research managers to confront planning challenges and reassess several old assumptions on the process of industrial research. Of specific concern are the generic lessons learned by the industrial research industry from 1970 to 1990 in integrating the research function with strategic planning.
