Abstract

The status of librarianship in the Sultanate of Oman is discussed. Currently, there are 178 libraries, consisting of 13 academic libraries, 134 school libraries, 22 government libraries, four special libraries, three public libraries and two foreign libraries. The development of academic and school libraries has been accelerated by the sultanate's program to improve the quality of education in Oman. Government and private libraries are underdeveloped with inadequate professional staff and sub-standard services. Library education in Oman is offered in the college level.
