Abstract: An investigation of the production of N2 gas through anammox is conducted in sediment slurries in situ NO(sub 2)(super -) concentrations in the presence and absence of NO(sub 3)(super -). The behavior of anammox is explored by use of a simple anammox-denitrification model, and the concept of a biphasic system for anammox in estuarine sediments is proposed.
