Abstract

African American Pentecostalists are moved by the Spirit when they congregate to worship. Speaking in tongues is regarded as a sign of salvation. Though they are regularly transported to another realm, they remain committed to improving their lot and that of others in this world. The Soul Saving Station Pentecostal Church in New York City serves meals to homeless people, counsels those with drug problems and runs a school for its members.
