Abstract

The concept of American English was developed between the Revolution and the Civil War. The controversy over the idea was part of an attempt to conceptualize a cohesive nation and the identity of America. The debates over American English revealed something about the association between discovery and invention in modern theories of knowledge. Debates about language were associated with the liberating implications of democracy.
