Abstract
- FADH2 and methenyltetrahydrofolate (MTHF) mediates photocatalysis. These cofactors are utilized by Escherichia coli photolyase (PL) in repairing pyrimidine dimers in DNA. The mechanism converts light energy to chemical energy. Only FADH2 and MTHF were known to repair these dimers before but the presence of a third cofactor was established. The function of Trp-277 chromophore residue containedin E. coli PL as a photosensitizer was not well documented before. This residuecan repair dimers if photoreactivation is done in the whole UV-visible range.
