Abstract
- Extensive research on mycoplasma adhesion may eventually lead to the development of a vaccine for M. pneumonia. Mycoplasmas are organisms that lack a cell wall and cause infections by adhering to specific receptors on the host cell membrane. This attachment is due to the presence of adhesins that are incorporated into their cell membrane.Research efforts on M. pneumoniae and M. genitalium has led to the identification of the chemical and molecular properties of the major adhesins P1 and MgPa. These findings pave the way for the development of a vaccine for M. pneumonia based on the P1 molecule.
