Abstract

The British government review of the proposed coal mine closures should lay the foundations for a national energy policy. British Gas is expanding overseas. It would like to see a stable regulatory framework so it can plan for the future. The future for the twelve regional electricity distribution companies is bright but they hope to keep a low profile in the coal industry review. The two Scottish electricity companies have both generating and distributing rights and profits have risen since privatisation. Government commitment to renewable energy seems to have reduced.
