Abstract

A new British drug, lamotrigine, is being used in the treatment of children with epilepsy. About 100,000 children in the United Kingdom suffer from epilepsy. In severe cases the child can live in a twilight state, profoundly handicapped. Existing treatments do not work in about 1/3 of cases. Some children treated with lamotrigine have improved dramatically. Tests carried out at a special school for epileptic children have found about half the children show considerable improvement when treated with lamotrigine.
