Abstract

Feminists have criticized the Christian Holy Cross as a symbol because it legitimizes suffering and counsels endurance to those who are oppressed such as battered women. The Holy Cross may be better understood not as a symbol of suffering, but one of resurrection and resistance. As such, it helps those who suffer to understand that their suffering as part of a common experience shared by other humans and by God.
