Abstract: A shift in vibrational frequency in response to an externally applied electric field is observed in the surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectra of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) functionalized with pendant nitrile effect. A method for the observation of E field within the diffuse double-layer at SAM-modified tuning rates of a small, isolated vibrational probe molecule is presented.
