Abstract

An analysis of rationality of Stalinist rule, describing its operation in and consequences for one sphere of everyday life while focusing on the interaction between economic planning and regional officials' behavior during second five-year plan is presented. Evolution of mass purge due to enforcement of political control over the peripheral economy is discussed.
