Abstract
- The fin-de-siecle fear of the recidivist was a specification and refinement of more generalized fears of social disorder. A carceral institution is required to protect the society against the threat of the fin-de-siecle fear of the recidivist, not only to deter the behavior but also to punish the malfeasant.
