Abstract

Jointly owned morning and afternoon newspapers are merging, signaling the possible demise of the afternoon papers. This pattern has emerged in San Diego, CA, Newport News, Roanoke and Richmond, VA, and Charleston, SC. Newspaper management claims the consolidations are driven by budget concerns and demographic changes. Critics of the mergers feel the phasing out of afternoon papers will limit the range of editorial opinion and coverage available to readers.
