A highly divergent mitochondrial DNA lineage of Microtus agrestis in southern Europe

Abstract: The phylogeographic pattern of field vole, Microtus agrestis, in southern and central Europe was examined by the analysis of a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome in 74 specimens from 44 localities. The highly divergent southern mtDNA lineage and its unusual geographic distribution are described in detail.
