Abstract: The Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure updates the guidelines it last published in 1997 for diagnosing and treating hypertension. It incorporates compelling new evidence that thiazide diuretics are more effective than other drugs in preventing cardiovascular disease in people with high blood pressure.
