Abstract
- The Habermas Colloquium has been held since 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, organized by the research group Philosophy and Information Policy of IBICT. The Colloquium on Philosophy of Information takes place simultaneously from 2014. These two events also signal the relevance and relevance of critical thinking and Critical Theory in the context of scientific and technological research in Brazil. Each year the Colloquiums have a central theme: Representation, democracy and social control in 2014; The limits of communicative freedom in 2015; Contemporary conflicts: human rights and solidarity in 2016; The inclusion of the other in 2017; Law and democracy: between facts and norms in 2018; Recognition of the other and the rule of law in 2019. The theme of the 2020 Colloquia, Public Sphere in Internet Times, was chosen at the beginning of the year in which it took place. However, in April 2020, the entire organization process was suspended due to the global emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The health crisis imposed restrictions on social interactions to control the circulation of the offending viral agent. Face-to-face activities at research institutes and universities have been suspended. In mid-2020 the multiple experiences taught that events, meetings and research meetings can be carried out satisfactorily through the Internet. The organizing committee of the Colloquia then decided to hold the event, transferring the dates from September to November. The central theme was maintained. The holding of the Colloquiums should be understood as an act of resistance by researchers and students of Critical Theory, particularly the thinking of Jürgen Habermas, and the Philosophy of Information. In the second half of 2020, there was a confluence of two obscure forces in Brazilian society: on the one hand, the denial of science to face the pandemic; and on the other, the cut in public spending on education and research. The three days of the Colloquia were a good opportunity for interaction and discussion. It was a joy in itself, when many researchers and students were tired of social isolation and remote work. Finding colleagues and friends who share ideas and interests is always invigorating. And it was. 12 sessions were held, between round tables, coordinated communications and conference. The event was broadcast on YouTube and the recorded sessions are available on that platform. Now we are making available the texts of the presentations. The Proceedings of this edition of the Colloquia, as well as those of the previous editions, can be found in open access on the Internet. The research group Philosophy and Information Policy at IBICT thanks its partners in organizing this long journey: researchers and students from the federal universities of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Fluminense, Rio de Janeiro, UniRio, Alagoas, Paraíba, from the State University of Londrina, from PUC in Rio Grande do Sul and from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. We hope with this publication of the Annals of Colloquia 2020 to contribute to the dissemination and discussion of critical thinking and to the defense of human rights and democracy. To think is to resist.
